Joy, Many attorneys that say they can help you with your Loan Modification are doing it with shady practices, and for the most part, many end up not doing anything to help. What many law firms are doing is requiring that you pay money up front to them. This is illegal. They try to get around it by calling it a "retainer", but the truth of the matter is, you shouldn't have to pay anything upfront. Before you take that chance, I would contact your lender and see if they will work with you. Many will because they would rather negotiate with you directly rather than deal with a third party like an attorney. Good Luck!
