Reported imaginary "discrepancy", but eventually changed the report when I complained
HireRight was hired by my new employer to verify my employment application. I had reported my BA and my MS degrees. HireRight used a third party (NSCH) to inquire about my MS, and apparently NSCH reported back to HireRight about my BA only. HireRight then sent a report to my employer saying that there was a "discrepancy" in my report, and the word was in a red font. They said the discrepancy was in the type of the degree that I had earned, and in the date that I earned it. I called to complain about the word "discrepancy", which I felt was a provocative and inaccurate characterization of what they learned. I asked how they would have characterized it if they had gotten no information from NSCH. Answer: "Unable to Verify". I asked them to change "Discrepancy" to the more accurate and neutral "Unable to Verify", but they refused. If I am trying to verify your claim that you were at the grocery store on Saturday, and I only find evidence that you were there a week earlier, this is not a discrepancy, since you could have been there both times. It is just irrelevant information. I am unable to verify your claim. Is this a difficult concept? Apparently so. I strongly object both to their inaccurate characterization, and to their refusal to change it to something more accurate when I contacted them. I have filed a complaint about this incident to the Federal Trade Commission, and will also file a complaint with my employer. ------------------ UPDATE: After speaking to two levels of customer service people at HireRight, and not getting anywhere, and after filing this review, I found the email address of the Data Correction Officer at HireRight, on the "Contact Us" page of their web site. I sent him the details, including the fact that I had complained to the FTC, and cc'd the CEO. I got a call very quickly, and they completely resolved the problem. So I give them one star for their original work, and 5 stars for fixing the problem once they got some prodding.
