Gregory,

One caveat: There are a lot of outfits that claim they can help you get a government grant and almost every one of them asks for money in advance. Don't, under any circumstances, fall for this scam. You won't get a grant and the only thing they'll do, if anything, is turn you onto other scam artists who have as their goal separating you from your money.

In the years I've been doing this, I've yet to see any government agency offering grants to start a small business.

This is a really difficult subject but it's especially tough now because of the credit crisis and the reluctance of banks to lend. I came across a link to CAMEO, which is The California Association of Micro Enterprise Opportunity (www.microbiz.org). It's a statewide association of organizations, agencies, and individuals dedicated to furthering microenterprise development in California. You should be able to get some information from them that will be helpful.

I wouldn't pin your hopes on government grants though.

Good luck with your business concept!
