Alternative investment funds are investment vehicles that focus on assets or strategies outside traditional stocks, bonds, and cash. Depending on the fund structure, they may invest in private equity, private credit, real estate, hedge funds, infrastructure, commodities, or other specialized assets. For investors, alternative investment funds can provide access to opportunities that may have different return drivers from public markets. However, they can also involve longer holding periods, limited liquidity, higher fees, and more complex investment structures. Life settlements are one specialized area within alternative investing. In a life settlement, an investor acquires an existing policy and assumes responsibility for future premiums. The investment outcome is influenced by factors such as the policy's purchase price, death benefit, premium obligations, fees, and the insured's actual longevity. Investors considering alternative investment funds should review the fund structure, underlying assets, fees, liquidity provisions, risks, and expected investment horizon before committing capital. The objective should be to understand how the investment fits into the broader portfolio rather than focusing on the alternative label alone.
