It is a common misconception that a silt fence can be used to block high-velocity water in a ditch or stream channel. These barriers are specifically designed for sheet flow, which is shallow water moving across a broad area, rather than concentrated channels. If placed in a high-flow area, the pressure will almost certainly cause the silt fence to fail, leading to a blowout that releases a large volume of sediment at once. For concentrated flows, other erosion control measures like rock check dams or sediment basins are more appropriate than a standard silt fence.
