Geomembrane prevents or significantly reduces seepage by creating a low-permeability layer between the contained liquid and the underlying ground. Soil naturally contains pores and pathways through which water can move. When a suitable geomembrane is installed over a properly prepared surface, it creates a much stronger barrier to that movement. Large geomembrane sheets are generally joined using specialized welding methods so that the finished liner forms a continuous containment layer. Seam quality is extremely important because an improperly welded joint can become a weak point. Before installation, the subgrade should also be cleared and prepared to reduce the risk of punctures caused by stones, roots, debris, or sharp projections. Protective geotextile layers may be used in some projects for additional cushioning. The geomembrane itself does not absorb the liquid; instead, it restricts its movement through the lining system.
