Selecting the appropriate geomembrane requires careful evaluation of project requirements, environmental conditions, and engineering performance criteria. The first consideration is the type of application. Landfills, mining operations, reservoirs, canals, wastewater treatment plants, and decorative ponds all have different containment requirements. Engineers must determine whether the project requires maximum chemical resistance, high flexibility, UV stability, or superior puncture resistance before selecting the appropriate geomembrane material. The material type is another critical factor. HDPE is generally preferred for landfill, mining, and industrial containment because of its excellent chemical resistance and strength. LLDPE offers greater flexibility for irregular surfaces, while EPDM and PVC are often selected for ponds and landscaping applications where flexibility is essential. Thickness should also be chosen according to expected mechanical stresses, traffic loads, and puncture risks.
