AP,

Paying an entity for loan modification upfront has been illegal for almost a full year now. Never pay for a modification, you are better off calling your bank and trying yourself. You should only pay an attorney or entity working for you for a loan modification AFTER it has been completed. Loan Mods are the biggest scam California has ever seen, 9/10 are fake and never make it anywhere. See link below to the Department of Real Estate and the law making it illegal.

WATCH OUT...SCAM COMPANYS ARE POPING UP ALL OVER CALIFORNIA. WORK DIRECTLY WITH YOUR MORTGAGE COMPANY. ITS FREE AND THE MORTGAGE COMPANY WOULD RATHER DEAL WITH YOU DIRECTLY.
