Removal should only take place after the contributing drainage area has been completely stabilized with permanent vegetation, landscaping, or asphalt paving that eliminates the threat of ongoing erosion. To remove a silt fence, workers carefully pull the support stakes out of the ground and detach the fabric, taking care not to spill any residual trapped sediment back onto the newly stabilized slope. The collected sediment that accumulated behind the barrier during construction should be graded smooth to match the surrounding topography and immediately seeded or mulched to promote quick grass growth. The old fabric and posts must then be hauled away and disposed of or recycled in accordance with local solid waste management guidelines rather than left behind to clutter the site.
