Whether life insurance as an investment makes sense depends heavily on the type of policy, the investor's objectives, costs, and how the policy is being used. Life insurance is primarily designed to provide a death benefit, although certain permanent policies can also accumulate cash value. That cash value may have features that make permanent insurance useful as part of a broader financial strategy. From an investment perspective, however, it is important to distinguish between owning a life insurance policy for personal financial planning and investing in life insurance policies through the life settlement market. In a life settlement transaction, an investor acquires an existing qualifying life insurance policy and becomes responsible for future premiums. The investor ultimately receives the policy's death benefit when the insured dies. The investment outcome depends largely on factors such as the purchase price, premium obligations, policy terms, and actual mortality compared with actuarial life-expectancy estimates. This makes life settlements fundamentally different from investing in stocks or bonds. The return is linked to an insurance policy and actuarial outcomes rather than company earnings or bond prices. As with any alternative investment, investors should carefully evaluate risks, liquidity, expenses, projected returns, and suitability before committing capital.
