Hi,my husband is hoping to start his own business. I'm trying to figure out how to apply for a government grant. It's very overwhelming & also afraid of getting ripped off by one of these sites that claim to be able to help with it. Has anyone had any dealings with this that could possibly point me in the right direction? Thank you.

Macy,

I understand completely! There are several companies seeking consumers out offering grants for several reasons but most of them are scams that ask for advance fees in order to obtain them.

The fact is that obtaining a grant for whatever reason is a process and a timely one at that. There are specific qualifications necessary to obtain them and their is no guarantee you will get them until the process has concluded. The greatest misconception is that you need a third party to assist you. Wrong! You can do this on your own. Check out the link below from our Scams section of Trustlink, it provide an insight to the current scams out there and some helpful tips on how you can go about obtaining a grant on your own.

Thanks Mari. I did actually find my way to the gov site but it looks as though they are very strict on the type of business they will fund. Tattoo shop wasn't one of them lol

Macy,

Try your chamber of commerce or city hall in the city you are opening your business. They may have some alternatives, it would seem to me at least tattoo shops would we equivalent to some of the cosmetic/permanent makeup businesses. Get creative!

Mari, you're a genius. I contacted our chamber, they have grants. They even offer a mentoring program for free that will help him with everything from financing to advertising. He should be up & running soon. Thank you so much.

Hi guys, Mari in particular. You seem very knowledgeable about the grant process and I was wondering if you can offer advice on my situation. I'm trying to start up a foundation and am in need of grants to begin. I work a full time job and take care of my mother who has early onset Alz. I need a grant writer who also submits and communicates with the donors or has established relationships with the donors, as I already work an obscene about of hours and would not be able to devote the start of time in the grant process alone. Do you or anyone have any suggestions?

I don't have anyone particular in mind but you can search by catagory using this link to find a government grant services by member, nonmember and geographical area.
