A common mistake is failing to trench and bury the bottom edge of the fabric, which allows runoff to flow freely underneath the barrier. Another frequent error is placing the posts on the wrong side of the fabric, causing the water pressure to pull the staples out and detach the material from its supports. Installing a silt fence across a concentrated flow path like a creek or drainage ditch will inevitably lead to structural failure due to excessive water velocity. Neglecting to compact the soil after backfilling the trench also leads to premature failure during heavy downpours.
