Many failures occur because the silt fence was placed in an area of concentrated flow rather than sheet flow. When too much water hits a single point, the pressure can cause the fabric to tear or the stakes to snap entirely. Another common issue is improper trenching, which allows water to wash out the soil underneath the silt fence and bypass the system. If the stakes are placed on the wrong side of the fabric, the weight of the water will pull the silt fence off the posts, leading to a complete system collapse.
