The most common cause of silt fence failure is improper installation, particularly failing to trench and compact the fabric into the ground. When the base is not secure, water quickly flows underneath the fabric, creating large washouts that bypass the filtering system entirely. Other failures occur when the barrier is placed in areas of concentrated flow, leading to structural collapse from the sheer weight of the water. Additionally, failing to remove accumulated sediment can cause the fabric to sag, tear away from its stakes, or capsize under intense pressure.
