A standard silt fence is manufactured using a synthetic geotextile fabric made from woven polypropylene fibers that are highly resistant to tearing, rotting, and chemical degradation. The fabric is specifically engineered to allow a slow rate of water permeability while retaining fine particles of silt, clay, and sand on the disturbed site. The material must also be treated with special stabilizers to resist damage from prolonged ultraviolet radiation exposure from the sun, which would otherwise weaken the plastic fibers within weeks. The accompanying stakes are typically made from durable hardwoods like oak or heavy-duty t-post steel to withstand being driven into compacted, rocky soils. Heavy-duty versions may also incorporate a wire mesh backing to provide extra physical reinforcement in areas expecting high volumes of sediment and runoff.
