A silt fence should only be removed once the upstream area has been permanently stabilized and the risk of erosion is gone. This usually means that vegetation has been established, such as grass or sod, or that the area has been paved or covered with permanent landscaping materials. Removing a silt fence too early can lead to a sudden discharge of sediment that undoes months of environmental protection work. Once the ground is stable, the silt fence fabric is pulled up, and the stakes are removed for reuse or disposal. The most critical step in the removal process is to smooth out the area where the trench was located and seed it immediately to prevent that specific spot from eroding. Proper decommissioning of the silt fence is the final step in a successful erosion and sediment control plan.
