A silt fence should only be removed once the upslope area has been permanently stabilized with vegetation, mulch, or sod. Removing the barrier too early can result in significant erosion and the loss of expensive topsoil. Once the grass or ground cover is established enough to prevent soil movement, the fence can be taken down. The accumulated sediment behind the barrier should be spread out and seeded, and the fabric and stakes should be disposed of properly according to local waste management regulations.
