A temporary silt fence should only be removed after the upslope disturbed soil has been permanently stabilized and the risk of erosion is gone. Stabilization is typically achieved when a healthy layer of vegetation, such as grass or sod, has completely covered the bare earth, or when materials like mulch or gravel are applied. Removing the barrier too early can result in unexpected sediment runoff during the final phases of a project. Once the site is stable, the silt fence fabric and stakes are pulled from the ground, and the remaining trench is leveled.
