Sediment must be removed from a silt fence when it accumulates to approximately one-third or one-half of the total above-ground height of the barrier. Allowing too much mud and debris to pile up against the fabric exerts immense hydrostatic pressure on the posts, which can cause the entire system to collapse. The removed sediment should be deposited in a secure, stable area on the job site where it cannot wash back into the protected perimeter. Timely cleanouts restore the storage capacity of the barrier and extend its operational lifespan.
