This company said they got me lower interest rate, but will not send me any paper work until I send them $1,495.00 after they got $1,000.00 grant. Is this legal?

No, what they are doing is not legal. Can you provide the name of the company and can you clarify how far along you are in your transaction with the company? You said they "got you a lower interest rate" but it doesn't appear you've paid any money yet.

Also what did you mean by "after they got $1,000 grant"?

In general, we recommend that if you are having trouble making your mortgage payments we would recommend that you first seek a loan modification through a HUD approved non-profit housing counselor ASAP. If you are in CA and have been unemployed you may qualify for the state's Unemployment Mortgage Assistance Program that was launched in January 2011. Call 888-954-KEEP (5337) to see if you qualify.

CA has other mortgage and renter assistance programs besides the Unemployment one launching in the first 2 weeks of February 2011. Check our Facebook page for updates on these: http://www.facebook.com/Los.Angeles.BBB

If you don't qualify for the CA state programs, they will refer you to another national foreclosure prevention hotline to speak with a HUD certified housing counselor who can evaluate your housing options, open lines of communication with mortgage lenders, negotiate a loan modification, and help you with household budgeting, all at no cost.

National Foreclosure Prevention Hotline: 888-995-4673 (Remember, if you are a CA resident call their special number for CA mortgage assistance programs: 888-954-KEEP (5337)

The lower interest rate comes from the lender on your loan...not the 3d party advocate...they just negotiate it for you. Just call your lender directly....if they are lowering your rate, they will tell you. Either it happened, or it didn't. I'll bet it did not.

I personally worked with CAG and i am living proof they do a great job! I thank God he put Consumer Advocates Group into my life or we would be homeless. Its funny all you people have opinions on how this company works but not one of you have ever used this firm. If anything what you people are doing is hurtig good people that need help and this company is helping people. By writing all this nasty stuff you are discouraging good people from getting help. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. God bless you D
