I'm getting quotes to re-pipe my home that currently has inferior plumbing. I've gotten three quotes and they are all over the board ($5k, $8k, $11k). I'm doing research on the companies, material and BBB ratings. Why would the bids be so different?

Chantal,

The wide range in quotes may come from the materials used (PVC vs. Copper, etc) as well as the quality of workmanship that will be applied. Of course, there's always the chance that a contractor is overbidding - which is why you want to make sure to check these companies out with the BBB, TrustLink, and the Contractor's State License Board (CSLB). You can contact the CSLB at 800-321-2752.

One other reason for the wide difference in quotes could be the company's marketing costs. I have found that companies that call you over the phone to offer you a quote usually charge anywhere from 3 time to 10 times the cost of local contractors I find through referrals. If the company insists that both spouses be present in order to give an estimate, the price will be high in comparison to other contractors. They have to pay a commission to these salespeople who are taking an hour or more of your time to give a sales pitch. Companies that do a lot of advertising also tend to have high prices because advertising is a high overhead expense. For referrals, I find people in different but related businesses are the most reliable. For example, for contractors, ask a realtor you trust. For litigation lawyers, ask a forensic accountant.
