Remodel of Home, Is this typical of contractors?
|

Hi. We're getting ready to start a remodel which will include adding another bathroom, fixing up the existing bathroom, complete remodel of the kitchen as well as add square footage off the living and changing the roof on house and garage from flat to pitched, paint, windows, new deck, etc. We have found a contractor that we really like and the estimate they have seems fair in my opinion. Only thing is, we don't have an exact architectural design, just a rough draft which their architect put together after our initial visit. They have offered to come and show us the materials that will be used in the price quoted. Is this typical practice of a general contractor? I thought we would be able to buy our own materials, fixtures, etc and then have them install them. What if you're not happy with the quality of materials you are given. Also, this company advertises as experts in kitchens, painting, patios but not necessarily room additions although they have said they can do that as well. We have been out to see a few of their projects, all minor ones such as a kitchen remodel, some balcony addition work and the improvement to the front of a home. All their worked looked like quality work. We're just not sure where to go from here. Thanks for all your help.

Elaine,
When you hire a contractor to repair, rebuild, or improve your home, the Better Business Bureau urges you to take the time to choose and hire the contractor who can perform work you'll be well satisfied with on terms you've agreed upon in advance.
To be sure of that your and the contractors obligations are, take a look at this helpful link on how to hire a contractor:
