Nightmare - Lost job offer due to these Incompetent Idiots

I was offered a position with a large banking/mortgage company in Phoenix pending a background check conducted through HireRight. I have been in the mortgage industry for over 20 years and have had numerous background checks conducted and never have had an issue.
I very carefully entered my employment history - verifying all start and end dates along with current contact information for the previous employers. I have been self employed for the past 2 1/2 years, worked for a very large banking institution prior to that and before that for a small private mortgage broker.
I received an email from Hireright asking me to produce a 1099 and my tax returns in order to verify self employment. I will not give a company who operates a call center out of Asia my personal tax returns or 1099. My self employment is verifiable through the Articles of Inc that I provided (date of filing matches my "Start" date. What I pay myself is no ones business!
I did't receive any requests for information for the second company on my history - but the third company - well, since it is out of business, again Hireright requested copies of my W2's, 1099's and/or tax returns. Let's see - I left there in 2006 - 10 years ago. Nope, don't have those returns any longer. Even the IRS only holds returns for typically 6 years and then there is a processing fee of $50 per return and can take up to 75 days to receive - Like the job will be open in 75 days for me.
The icing on the cake - please provide a copy of your high school diploma. I graduated in 1982 and have NO CLUE where this might be.

I wish that I could give a NEGATIVE star rating - but this site won't allow it. So, I am back to the job hunt thanks to a company that deems it necessary to negatively mark everything on your background check as a discrepancy or unverifiable.
