The cords to raise and lower the roller shades once installed prevented the shade from moving up or down - which is the whole purpose of having a shade. 

I've requested a full refund from Smith and Noble as this has been a completely dissatisfying experience (and I have holes in my walls now where the installer installed the blinds only to find out that they are unusable!).
