VPI happily took my money each month for 15 years. Now after the sadness of having to put my cat to sleep they drop me like a hot potato! I submitted approximately $1,300.00 worth of claims and was reimbursed approximately $250.00. When I questioned why this was so low, their response was that she reached her "lifetime maximum limit". Scam! Don't even think about buying a pet insurance from them. They won't tell you uncovered lists. Cancer endorsement plan? Yea! We paid these guys premiums for 2 years and then my Rabbit has little bump from a fall. We take the rabbit in since he stopped eating [just to be sure] and specifically told the Vet to only complete what is covered by VPI. They provided the right service and my Rabbit is now healthy again, $700 later. This was by-the-book people. VPI Insurance is a terrible insurance company. They take your monthly premiums but will find any method possible to avoid reimbursing you for a claim. I submitted all my medical records for my 8-year old Boxer to get him approved. Everything went through fine. He had 1 pre-existing condition. Each month we pay $50 a month for 9 years for the premium VPI coverage. Each time we take our dog into the vet, we are responsible for the whole bill. My wife and I take the invoice from the vet and submit for reimbursement. Last vet visit cost me 389.00 but after we got our refund back from VPI we got $190.00 minus $50 deducible totaling 140.00 check. Here is my concern. I too would say avoid VPI. The cost and frustration are not worth it. And I'm really confused how VPI could have an A+ rating by the BBB if so many people are unhappy. I signed my pet up for their policy in 2007. At first they were great. But when my dog started having serious health problems in 2009 they begin denying claims, making up diagnosis that dispute her vets conclusions, etc...At this point I have at least 8 claims they are denying that are valid. I generally have let the VPI claims results alone as VPI did generously (for good PR & marketing reasons) give the September 11th search & rescue dogs coverage for life. However, this latest denial of coverage irks me to the point I feel if they are doing it to one of the few 9-11 SAR dogs still alive, they surely do it to everyone's pets as well. I had horrible experience with VPI. I am trying to gather some complaints and file a lawsuit against them. My dog had back pain and got medication for that and they said this medication is for golocoma!!!!!!!!!!! My vet was laughing. Turns out VPI does not even have Doctors they have technicians which review the cases and believe me they will find a way to deny your claim I have filed 2 claims and 2/2 were denied due to very very very unreasonable causes. This company is absolutely the worst! I have a 15 yr. old cat, who up until two years ago, was in perfect health. I opened up a policy for him when he was a kitten, and have faithfully paid $50 a month since he was five months old. Luckily, I've barely had to use it, except for annual check ups and his yearly teeth cleaning, which they did reimburse. Nine years ago we adopted out first Bernese Mountain Dog. We knew full well that they had their fair share of health problems so, for the first time, we bought pet insurance, and because of the breeds history of cancer, added the cancer rider. This company is an absolute joke. We've paid them over $5000 in premiums during the last 5-6 years and never filed a claim until this month when one of our Boxers collapsed and was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy. I looked at the policy and saw that Cardiomyopathy is covered, but limited to $531, which I thought was ridiculously low, but since we were out nearly $2000 in veterinary bills, $531 was better than nothing. We just lost our Irish Setter to a fast moving cancer. Within a week of diagnosis, we had to put her down. We spent $2200 in that one week to try to get her some help, assured by the vet and the oncology specialist that this was cancer and would be covered by our pet insurance. I can't say enough bad things about this company. They regularly do not cover much of anything. Had a 382 dollar emergency vet visit for hives/an allergic reaction and they literally covered 52 dollars of the visit. An ear infection in the dog was called a "preexisting condition." I purchased the premium policy for my 5 month old puppy. My 105.00 vet visit was denied, they tried to say the vet didn't provide detailed info, which is NOT true, they showed me what they sent, a detailed invoice of all services rendered on that date. This insurance provider does not cover hardly anything, they are NOT clear on what they do an do not cover. If you are reading this, you are one of the smart ones doing their homework ahead of time. Save your money. VPI has a stable of attorneys willing to do and say anything to save the company a buck. I wasn't so proactive in my research. They can cancel you at will, they will 'lose' faxed medical records and ask you for more information over and over again, delaying what you THINK is your reimbursement. My Fiance and I had been highly referred to VPI Pet Ins. from a family friend. So I signed up our pomeranian in Aug of 07. For the year that my husband and I are stationed in Iraq, I bought VPI insurance for our three dogs. At no time was I warned by the sales representative that the insurance would not cover major surgeries during that first (& only) year. My fiance and myself had a policy on two of our dogs, that ended up being a waste of money and an even greater waste of our time with dealing with their customer service and claims department. One of our dogs, less than a year old had to go through 3 different surgeries in which we believed were covered by our insurance policy, but were denied. WASTE OF MONEY. FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY!!! When I started my current job in May 2006, I did not know that VPI was offered at a discount rate for employees. When I found out about this insurance, I signed up right away in December 2006. I have thought that $30 every two weeks was not too bad for piece of mind.
