In the early days, the hairpieces were very detectable, you were encouraged to keep some frontal hair to camouflage the units if possible. They attached the units with the "braid", meaning they kind of braided the hair together with your own. This sounds okay, but it put stress on your hair (until it could fall out), was painful, and was detectable to the touch.
