I nearly had a heart attack when I saw that I was PAST DUE on my payment to the CBC! I read the notice over and over, desperately searching for a phone number, and email... ANYTHING. It struck me that there was no contact information to plead my case for missing payment. ...So I googled. Nothing. Looks like California Business Collector is still preying on those that don't know all of the requirements for setting up a business in CA, and are sending out dodgy requests for $175. I just got an "official" looking letter from them to regarding my newly formed LLC. I don't know what it was but something just looked so suspect about this that I did an internet search and turned up this forum. Thank heavens I did. For anyone else out there being scammed by a-holes they are operating out of a new PO BOX address. dude, i just got this same letter in the mail. the address to send this payment is to a po box. something just looks strange about the printing on the front of the envelope. The California Business Collector (CBC) is a SCAM! They obviously are going through the lists of newly registered businesses (in my boyfriend's case, an LLC); they send a $175 request, with a penalty of $250 if the request is ignored, for..... what they need the money for is really unclear.... and then you see in fine print: "THIS PRODUCT OR SERVICE HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED OR ENDORSED BY ANY GOVERNMENT AGENCY AND THIS OFFER IS NOT BEING MADE BY AN AGENCY OF THE GOVERNMENT. 39&3001(D) THIS IS A... I received a piece of mail from this company. I was puzzled by the $175 inquiry to "REMIT PAYMENT IMMEDIATELY." As I read, I realized that the letter was solely quoting, verbatim, corporate law. No explanations of what or where. Since I am incorporated, and I am in the process of submitting the statement of information, I was aware that the "Secretary of State" is the only entity that would be requiring me to submit such documents. I just formed an LLC in January. I knew in April I had the $800 Franchise Tax to pay and a form to file with the Secretary of State. In early April California Business Collector sent me a mailing with a form that looked official, at the time. It boldly demanded "Remit Immediately" $175.00. This company sends fraudulent claims to new LLC's. They put an urgent amount of $175 on what looks like a government letter for services. This person and company is a scammer hoping that people don't know better. If you look them up on the internet there are several complaints about the same letter being sent to new LLC's. Twice now since we started an LLC, this company has sent an official-looking request for $175.00 so that one could easily think it is from the state, especially when you are new to doing business in California. There is no phone number or email address, only a PO box, so it is not easy to confirm that this NOT an offical notice from the Secretary of State's office but an offer for service. These guys are a scam. They troll through the records of new LLCs and then send you a statement to file a Statement of Information on your behalf for $175. The Statement of Information filing fee is $20. What a scam! Read More »

I set up an LLC about 2 months ago, and just received a letter from this company. It is clearly meant to look like an official government letter, down to the "2010" printed on the envelope to make it look like the census form. California Business Collector (CBC) offers an unnecessary "service" for a fee. They mail out documents they call a "Disclosure Statement" that requests immediate remittance. However the service they provide is to file information with the California Secretary of State, which is something companies can do for themselves. The statement they send is purposefully misleading.
