Review 7/20/2011
This company was recommended to me through my realtor who sold me a 2700 sq/ft home built in the late 1980's. The cement tiled roof was well beyond its life span and needed to be replaced. The Bossler Roofing Inc. company sales person stated it would take approximately 3-4 weeks to replace, give or take, depending on the weather to complete the job. Well, five weeks later we had a new roof. On two occasions, there were 3-5 concurrent days that no one from this company was on site working. Despite sunny days and not a cloud in the sky or rain anywhere in sight. In the end we have a new roof at a cost that exceeded our original quoted price by 20%. Here are a couple of my personal lessons learned for anyone considering replacing their roof and using this or any roofing company: 1. Ask if the company subcontracts their work out to other companies. The company (sub contractors) that tore out our old roof stated that the fascia they replaced would be caulked, primed, and painted. Yes, the caulking was completed for 98% of the replaced fascia, but no priming or painting was completed. After bringing this to the attention of Bossler Roofing Inc., we learned that this type of work in not included in the contract. Our bad, we neglected to ask about this in the beginning. 2. Ask if the company removes your existing gutter, will they rehang it upon completion. During the initial tear out, we asked the contractors to place all of the existing gutter that they took down in a pile on the edge of our yard. We later found out the existing gutter was taken down and disposed of. We even paid an additional fee for the removal of extra materials, I think our gutter was part of this cost. After questioning this practice with the Bossler Company representative, we were told that a lot of the time, gutters that are removed are not salvageable so they just assume this needs to be hauled off to the trash. 3. Ask if the company does periodic checks on the sub contractors work and provide you with a progress and cost update each step of the way. The only time we heard from Bossler Roofing Inc., was when it was time to collect payment during each phase of the project. On several occasions, we left telephone messages or spoke to a Bossler's receptionist notifying them about issues regarding the work. For example, roof waist left on the premises, extra materials left behind, incomplete mortar/cement fill of the tiles to the roof structure, and incomplete caulking to name a few. I wonder, had we never inspected this work along the way, what kind of condition my "new" roof would be in at the end of the day. 4. Ask if the company will negotiate a set price not to exceed for extra materials needed to complete the project. Half way through the project, we were asked to pay an additional $5,000 for extra materials. Our bad, we should of made sure that a set dollar amount for extra materials was in the contract, and anything over this amount should be communicated before the work is to be completed. When I questioned this practice with the Bossler Roofing Inc. representative, we were told, "What are they (contractors) suppose to do?" the roof was already torn off and they had to complete the job. My ratings on scale of 1 to 5 with 1 = Poor and 5 = Excellent. Cost = 2 Customer Service = 3 Communication = 1 Satisfaction with new roof = 4 Timeliness = 2
